These release notes cover the HP-UX 11i V1.5 (September 2001) release of the Support Tools (diagnostics).

Overview

The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a set of online support tools for HP-UX 11i V1.5 systems, enabling you to verify and troubleshoot system hardware, and to examine system logs.

STM offers several tool types, including information tools, verifiers, exercisers, expert tools, firmware update tools, diagnostics and utilities.

Changes

The online Support Tools Manager (STM) was enhanced and updated for the current release.

Changes to User Interface and Platform

• JAGad66614
  When a daemon is shutdown and restarted, the functionality actually works. However, the UI activity log had the following error logged (with the September 2001 release, the spurious error is no longer logged).

  Sample Error Message:

  Thu May 10 10:44:22 2001: User Name: root, UI Process ID: 10871
  
  Execution information string did not have the expected number of 
  elements.  Got (-1)elements and expected (7).
  
  Possible Causes/Recommended Action:
  
  Executable file is corrupt or is not a valid executable.
  Remove or replace corrupt executablefile and retry request.
  Source for executable file had an invalid execution information 
  string.  If executable source is available, fix execution information 
  string in sourcefile and recompile.  Replace executable and retry
  request.  If executable source is not available,
  Internal Application error for executable.
  
  Internal Application error.
  

• Modified code to check for existance and execution permission on browser prior to attempting to launch it. Added message to UI status window indicating failure to launch browser, as follows:

  Launching browswer (XXXX) to display help failed.
  

  In addition, an error message will be logged to the UI activity log, as follows:

  Wed Jun 20 13:08:33 2001: User Name: root, UI Process ID: 3157
  
  Access to the browser (/opt/netscape/netscape) used to view online 
  help failed with errno (0x2).
  
                                   
  Possible Causes/Recommended Action:
                                 
  Ensure the selected browser is installed and executable.
  
  Change the UI general options to specify a cords/06 browser
  that is installed and executable.
  

• JAGad73874
  Fixed xstm SIGSEGV exit when selecting Filter->Set in text map mode.

• JAGad69001
  Bug fix for 11.20.

  Fixed display of some dialog help so that it actually displays the help rather than displaying nothing and adding an error to the UI activity log.

  Messages similar to the following would be logged into the UI activity log:

• JAGad69327
  Fix functionality previously added so that commenting out configuration parameter LOCAL_ONLY_ENABLE will cause it to be reset to the default.

General Changes to Tools

• JAGad69747
  QUANTUMATLAS_V_36_SCA has been added to the supported list. This change affects the scsi_disk firmware update and expert tools.

• Added 14X MO drive support. This involved adding coverage for scsi_mo expert, exercise, diagnose, firmware update, info, and verify tools, and for utilities.

    Fixed a catalog access problem: the correct catalog file tl_adapter.cat was not being accessed, while trying to obtain the Tool information for the diagnose tool tl_adapter.cat. Instead, the catalog file fc_adaptor.cat was being accessed.

    Fixed a problem where a device couldn't be selected in copyutil using cstm.

Known Problems

Symptoms: The Memory Page Deallocation (MPD), which runs on most current HP-UX computer systems, does not work on the RX 4610 computer. If you look in the activity log for memlogd, you will see a message saying, "unsupported device."

Cause/Action: MPD cannot be implemented on RX 4610, because of the design of that system. The memlogd daemon cannot run on it.

Symptoms: In xstm (the graphical interface for online diagnostics), no online help appears when you enter a command for online help. The diagnostics themselves are still functional.

Cause/Action: Online help for xstm requires that the Netscape browser be installed on the computer. The xstm interface invokes the Netscape browser to display .htm files located in the diagnostics sub-directories on disk. (The mstm and cstm interfaces do not use the Netscape browser.)

The easiest way to install the Netscape browser is from the AR (Application Release) Media supplied with the computer.

Defect Reporting

Use CHART to report defects in STM. The project name is diag.stm.tools.hpux for individual tools, and diag.stm.ui.hpux for the user interface. If you don't have access to CHART, contact an HP representative to enter a defect for you.

Online Help

Online help has changed for HP-UX 11i V1.5. On previous operating systems, STM used the HP-Help system to display help information. With HP-UX 11i V1.5, help information is provided via Web pages.

The xstm platform will open a browser on the workstation and display help from files on the local disk. The same files are also available over the Web.

The mstm and cstm platform will display ASCII text for several help topics. For complete online help, consult the Web pages at the URLs located below:
