- Problem Description (Background)
The Support Plus CD-ROM contains both the OnlineDiag bundle and the EMS filesets EMS-Core.EMS-CORE and EMS-Config.EMS-GUI. When you install the OnlineDiag bundle, these EMS filesets are also installed.
The EMS filesets on IPR 9912 or later may be incompatible with older versions of certain EMS-dependent products. These products include MC/ServiceGuard, ServiceGuard OPS Edition and High Availability Monitors.
- Some older versions of these products will not work after OnlineDiag is installed.
- More recent versions of these products will continue to work. The only side-effect will be warning and error messages generated by Software Distributor (SD) commands when used on these products. These messages can be ignored.
- The most recent versions of these products are completely compatible.
The OnlineDiag bundle is NOT affected by the EMS compatibility problem. The EMS bundle is fully compatible with the OnlineDiag bundle.
You can ignore the rest of this document if:
- You do NOT have MC/ServiceGuard, ServiceGuard OPS Edition, or High Availability Monitors installed on your system.
Use the "swlist" command to determine whether the products are installed on your system.
- You have the most recent version of any of the following EMS-dependent products already installed on your system:
MC/ServiceGuard A.10.12 or later (HP-UX 10.20) MC/ServiceGuard A.11.09 or later (HP-UX 11.00) ServiceGuard OPS Edition A.11.09 or later (HP-UX 11.00) High Availability Monitors A.03.10 or later (HP-UX 10.20) High Availability Monitors A.03.10 or later (HP-UX 11.00)Use the "swlist" command to determine the product versions installed on your system. The EMS compatibility problem was eliminated starting with the product versions listed above. All of the EMS-dependent products listed above or later are fully compatible, both from a functional and SD perspective, with EMS A.03.10 or later.
You may be affected by the EMS compatibility problem if have one or more of the following products installed:
Very old versions which must be upgraded:
MC/ServiceGuard A.10.10, A.11.01, A.11.03 ServiceGuard OPS Edition A.11.02, A.11.03These versions will not work if OnlineDiag (IPR 9912 or later) is installed. These products should be upgraded to the most recent version.More recent versions for which upgrading is optional:
MC/ServiceGuard A.10.11, A.11.04, A.11.05, A.11.07, A.11.08 ServiceGuard OPS Edition A.11.04, A.11.05, A.11.06, A.11.08 High Availability Monitors A.03.00, A.03.01, A.03.02These products were originally designed to work with EMS A.03.00 only. However, they will continue to work correctly even if OnlineDiag (IPR 9912 or later) is installed. The only side-effect is that you will receive error and warning messages if you run SD commands (swverify, swinstall, and swremove) on the EMS-dependent products. See "SD Error/Warning Messages"below.
- For swverify, ignore the messages. You do not need to do anything more. END OF PROCEDURE.
- For swremove, ignore the messages and proceed with removal of the product. You do not need to do anything more. END OF PROCEDURE.
- For swinstall, certain SD options must be set to work around the problem and allow software installation to succeed. See "Installing Older Versions of EMS-Dependent Products"
SD Error/Warning Messages
The following examples show the messages generated by swverify, swremove, and swinstall commands. These messages will be generated with versions of EMS-dependent products which are SD-incompatible with EMS version A.03.10 or later.
These examples are for MC/ServiceGuard bundle (B3935BA). Other EMS-dependent products will generate similar messages.
swverify example
%swverify B3935BA EMS-Core.EMS-CORE,r=A.03.00,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_700/800,v=HP EMS-Core.EMS-CORE,r=A.03.00,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_700/800,v=HP * Could not apply the software selection "EMS-Core.EMS-CORE,r=A.03.00,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_700/800,v=HP"; it is not available from depot or root "ftsys9:/". * Software selections: B3935BA,r=A.10.11,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_800,v=HP Cluster-Monitor.CM-CORE,l=/,r=A.10.11,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_800,v=HP:/ Cluster-Monitor.CM-CORE-MAN,l=/,r=A.10.11,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_800,v=HP: Package-Manager.CM-PKG,l=/,r=A.10.11,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_800,v=HP:/ Package-Manager.CM-PKG-MAN,l=/,r=A.10.11,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_800,v=HP:/ ServiceGuard.CM-SG,l=/,r=A.10.11,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_800,v=HP:/ * Could not apply the software selection "EMS-Core.EMS-CORE,r=A.03.00,a=HP-UX_B.10.20_700/800,v=HP"; it is not available from depot or root "ftsys9:/".swremove exampleAfter you attempt to swremove one of the affected versions of the EMS-related products and perform a remove analysis, the following message will be logged:
The software specification B3935BA,r=A.10.11,a=HP-UXB.10.20_800,v=HP refers to a bundle or to a product, subproduct, or fileset within a bundle). Only some of the software specified could be selected. The messages below show those items which could not be selected and those items which were selected but generated a warning: Could not apply the software selection "EMS=Core.EMS-CORE,r=A.03.00,a=HP=UX_B.10.20_700/800,v=HP"; it is not available from depot or root "ftsys9:/".swinstall exampleAfter you attempt to swinstall one of the affected versions of the EMS-related products and perform an install analysis, the following message will be logged (followed by others):
ERROR: A later revision (One with a higher revision number of fileset "EMS-Core.EMS-CORE,r=A.03.00" has already been installed. Either remove this fileset or change the "allow_downdate" option to "true".To work around the swinstall problem, follow the procedure Installing Older Versions of EMS-Dependent Products below.Installing Older Versions of EMS-Dependent Products
This section describes how to install or reinstall any version of MC/ServiceGuard, ServiceGuard OPS Edition or High Availability Monitors which has a dependency on EMS A.03.00.
This procedure uses the example of MC/ServiceGuard A.11.08 on a system that has EMS A.03.10 already installed. The procedure is similar for other EMS-dependent products.
- Run swinstall.
- Select the MC/ServiceGuard bundle B3935BA (or other EMS-related product).
- Mark it for installation.
- Perform install analysis. The analysis will fail. You will see several error messages in the SD log file, the first of which will be:
ERROR: A later revision (One with a higher revision number of fileset "EMS-Core.EMS-CORE,r=A.03.00" has already been installed. Either remove this fileset or change the "allow_downdate" option to "true".- Proceed with the installation. You may select from one of the following two installation options:
- Option 1:
- Go to the Options menu in swinstall and deselect the following options:
Autoselect dependencies when marking software Enforce dependency analysis errors in agent Reinstall filesets even if same revision already existsThen click OK.- Double-click the B3935BA bundle for MC/ServiceGuard. Do NOT mark for installation.
- Select the following filesets only and mark for installation:
Cluster-Monitor Package-Manager ServiceGuardIgnore any messages about the missing EMS-Core fileset.- Perform the install analysis. Ignore the WARNING messages and proceed with the installation.
- Option 2
- Run swinstall, go to the Options menu and select "Allow installation of lower version than current". This will allow you to install EMS A.03.00.
- Install (or reinstall) MC/ServiceGuard A.11.08.
- Reinstall EMS A.03.10 from the Support Plus Media.
Problem Description (Background)
The EMS filesets EMS-Core.EMS-CORE and EMS-Config.EMS-GUI are delivered on the Support Plus CD-ROM along with the OnlineDiag bundle. For IPR 9912 (December 1999) and IPR 0003 (March 2000), the EMS version is A.03.10. The Release Notes for EMS A.03.10 indicate that this version is only supported with the following EMS-dependent software:
MC/ServiceGuard A.10.12 or later (HP-UX 10.20) MC/ServiceGuard A.11.09 or later (HP-UX 11.00) ServiceGuard OPS Edition A.11.09 or later (HP-UX 11.00) High Availability Monitors A.03.10 or later (HP-UX 10.20) High Availability Monitors A.03.10 or later (HP-UX 11.00)The incompatibility issue arises if the system has EMS version A.03.00 or any product which contains the EMS filesets EMS-Core.EMS-CORE and/or EMS-Config.EMS-GUI version A.03.00 as part of its product structure. This includes:EMS-Core.EMS-CORE only ---------------------- MC/ServiceGuard A.10.11, A.11.04, A.11.05, A.11.07, A.11.08 ServiceGuard OPS Edition A.11.04, A.11.05, A.11.06, A.11.08 EMS-Core.EMS-CORE and EMS-Config.EMS-GUI ---------------------------------------- High Availability Monitors A.03.00, A.03.01, A.03.02
Note: The swlist command can be used to determine whether a product includes EMS filesets. For example, to verify that MC/ServiceGuard A.10.11 contains fileset EMS-Core.EMS-CORE, issue the swlist command with the -l option and specify the product number for MC/ServiceGuard:swlist -l fileset B3935BA
If the customer then installs the OnlineDiag bundle from IPR 9912 or IPR 0003 on a system which already has EMS software, either the entire product or only the filesets included with MC/ServiceGuard, ServiceGuard OPS Edition, or High Availability Monitors, it will be "silently" upgraded from version A.03.00 to A.03.10. SD will not log any warnings or errors. The customer will NOT know that their EMS software has been upgraded.
Subsequently, if the customer uses SD to verify, install or remove any software which has a dependency on EMS A.03.00, SD will log warning and/or error messages, indicating that the EMS A.03.00 is missing.
Note: This problem will also occur on any future IPR which delivers a version of EMS greater than or equal A.03.10 (e.g., EMS A.03.20 on IPR 0006).
