You may see error messages if VSE Management Software is causing HP SIM to exceed available memory.

With HP Capacity Advisor, you would see the following message:

Please see the VSE Management Software online help or Getting
Started Guide for more information on tuning HP SIM
configuration parameters.

With HP Global Workload Manager, both the following messages would appear as critical HP SIM events (gWLM events), assuming you have events configured. Also, they are logged to /var/opt/gwlm/gwlm.log.0 on HP-UX or to installation-path/logs/gwlm.log.0 on Windows.

The first message warns when the heap is almost full:

The reclaimable heap space for the HP Systems Insight Manager
JVM has exceeded the threshold of x%. Of the y bytes of total
heap space z bytes are in semi-permanent use. This may cause
a reduction in performance.

The second message indicates the heap is full:

The reclaimable heap space for the HP Systems Insight Manager
JVM has exceeded the threshold of x%. Of the y bytes of total
heap space z bytes are in semi-permanent use. Please restart
the HP Systems Insight Manager using the mxstop and mxstart
commands to correct this condition. If this condition returns
it may indicate the need to tune the HP Systems Insight
Manager configuration parameters. Please see the VSE Management
Software online help or Getting Started Guide for more
information on tuning HP SIM configuration parameters.

HP recommends a heap size for HP SIM of 1000MB when using VSE Management Software. Running vseinitconfig during installation/upgrade automatically sets the heap size to 1000 for you. It does this by updating/appending the JVMMAXHEAP property in the file globalsettings.props, leaving the property as follows:

JVMMAXHEAP=1000

On HP-UX, the properties file is at /etc/opt/mx/config/globalsettings.props. On Windows, it is at HPSIM_DIR/config/globalsettings.props.

If you rarely get the error, restarting HP SIM (as indicated in the message) typically clears the issue.

If you frequently get the error, you may want to:

  • Increase the JVMMAXHEAP value beyond 1000 (For information on the limits for JVMMAXHEAP on HP-UX, see www.hp.com/products1/unix/java/infolibrary/prog_guide/expanding_memory.html and select the topic “Allocating physical memory and swap in the Java heap”. On Windows, the limit is 1500, although it can be lower depending on the amount of code in the process.)

  • Limit the number of concurrent users and avoid concurrently performing a large number of tasks (such as generating reports that include many systems over long periods of time)

However, repeated occurence of the message most likely reflects a product issue that you should report to HP support.
