The VSE Management Software products
are licensed for use on managed systems as shown in Table 3-1. Unlicensed systems
are not accessible to the VSE Management Software products (see “Unlicensed Systems Alert”). Licenses are managed from the Central Management Server (CMS), using the HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) License Manager database. | | | | | NOTE: Use of the VSE Management Software may require additional product
licenses, depending on the details of your installation. | | | | |

To obtain a permanent License To Use (LTU) for VSE Management System products, contact your HP sales representative,
your HP services representative, or your authorized HP reseller. The
LTUs available for purchase are listed in “VSE and Related Product Licenses”. To use a purchased license, it must be added to the HP SIM License
Manager database on the CMS and then applied to a managed system.
For more information, see “Adding and Applying Licenses”. Unlicensed Systems Alert | |
Virtualization Manager is unable to display unlicensed systems.
At startup, Virtualization Manager displays an alert in the toolbar
if there are unlicensed systems that would be visible if they were
licensed. Clicking this alert displays the following text: The following systems were ignored by Virtualization Manager
because they either lack a valid license or the existing
license has expired. For assistance and more information on
licensing, use Tools->VSE Management Licensing Overview...
found on the VSE menu bar: [list of unlicensed systems] |

| Microsoft Windows | HP Virtualization Manager includes logical server management. A license for HP Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager is
required for managing logical servers on server blades. A license for Insight Control Environment is also required. |
On HP ProLiant servers and ProLiant server blades, a license
for Insight Control Environment (ICE) is required
for the VSE Management Software to be fully functional. The ICE license
includes HP Virtual Machine Management Pack (VMM) and Insight Power Manager, and is required for licensing HP iLO
Power Management Pack. A license for iLO2 is recommended so that power
information can be collected for Virtualization Manager meters and
capacity planning. VMware and Microsoft Virtual Server (MSVS) hosts must be properly configured and licensed within VMM. | | | | | NOTE: Unlimited
SMP Universal migrations are available when an HP Insight Dynamics
– VSE license is applied to a destination server or virtual
machine host. If no Insight Dynamics – VSE license is applied
to the destination server or virtual machine host, then a license
for SMP Universal is required in the SMP License Manager. For more
information about SMP licensing, see the HP Server Migration
Pack – Universal Edition User Guide.. | | | | |
The Capacity Advisor Extension Pack license allows you to collect
and analyze data from systems that are planned to be consolidated.
This license is only needed on managed systems that do not have a
license for Capacity Advisor, VSE Management Software for Integrity,
or HP Insight Dynamics – VSE. Table 3-4 Capacity Advisor Extension Pack | License Name | Licensed Products | Supported
Platforms | Notes |
|---|
| HP Capacity Advisor
Extension Pack | HP Capacity Advisor | HP servers running any version of HP-UX
11i, Microsoft Windows for Integrity, Linux for Integrity, or x86–based Microsoft Windows Server | License is valid for six months after
it is assigned to a system. Does not include license for HP Virtualization Manager. Systems with only this
license will not be visible in Virtualization Manager. |
Adding and Applying Licenses | |
To use a purchased license,
you must first add it to the HP SIM License Manager database on the
CMS, then apply the license to a specific managed system. The CMS
keeps track of how many of each type of license are available to be
applied to managed systems. As you apply licenses, the number of available
licenses decreases according to the license model shown in Table 3-1. To add and apply licenses, you must have administrative rights
on the CMS and you must be authorized for the All Tools toolbox on the managed systems
that you want to license. To assign administrative rights to an HP
SIM user, select Options Security Users and Authorizations User. To enable the All Tools toolbox, select Options Security Users and Authorizations Authorizations. To add and apply your purchased licenses
to managed HP Integrity or HP 9000 systems, follow the procedures
described in “Adding and Applying HP Integrity and HP 9000 Licenses”. To add and apply licenses to managed
HP ProLiant servers or ProLiant server blades, follow the procedures
described in “Add and Apply HP ProLiant Licenses” Adding and Applying HP Integrity and HP 9000 LicensesTo add and apply licenses, you must have administrative rights
on the CMS and you must be authorized for the All Tools toolbox on the managed systems
that you want to license. To assign administrative rights to an HP
SIM user, select Options Security Users and Authorizations User. To enable the All Tools toolbox, select Options Security Users and Authorizations Authorizations. There are two ways to add and apply VSE Management Software
licenses. Procedure 3-3 Deploy VSE Management Licenses (optional) Select the systems that
you want to license. You can select systems from an HP SIM collection,
such as All Servers. To
apply a license to a virtual machine, select its VM Host. Licenses
are never applied to individual virtual machines. If you
skip this step, you will be asked to select systems later in the procedure. From the HP SIM menu, select Deploy VSE Management for Integrity Licenses license, where license is one of
the available VSE Management Software licenses (see Figure 3-1). If no systems were selected in the first step, you must
select target systems now. You can select systems from a collection
or by searching for specific system names. Click Apply when to proceed to the “Verify Target Systems” screen.
This step is skipped if you already selected target systems in the
first step. The “Verify Target Systems” screen shows
your selected systems. Verify that the Tool launch OK? column displays “Yes” for each of the systems that
you want to license. If “No” is displayed for any sytem,
the license that you have selected cannot be applied to that system.
Click View details for an explanation of the
problem. Make sure that you have not selected a system
identified as a virtual machine (VM guest). To apply a license to
a virtual machine, select its VM Host. Licenses are never applied
to individual virtual machines. You can add or remove target systems from this list before
continuing. To proceed to the next step, click Run Now. If there are still selected systems that do not match the type
of license being applied, a warning is displayed. If you continue,
the mismatched systems are automatically removed from the target list. The “Deploy Licenses” screen shows the number
of licenses available to be applied and the current status of the
selected systems (see Figure 3-2). For each system, the number of licenses that
are currently applied to that system is shown in the Permanent
Per-Core Licenses field. You can change this value in the
next step. To include in this display all systems with assigned licenses
of the selected type, check the box labeled Show All Licensed
Systems. Enter the number of licenses to be applied to each system.
The VSE Management Software licenses are applied per core on HP Integrity and HP 9000 servers (see Table 3-1). This screen
shows the number of cores present in each system, if the software
is able to determine that value. To properly license a system, you
must apply as many licenses as there are cores in the system. To automatically
fill in the number of licenses field based on the number of detected
cores, click Auto-Fill. If the
software is not able to determine the number of cores present on a
system, you are responsible for determining the number of cores and
applying the correct number of licenses. If there are not enough available licenses, you can add
new license keys in this screen. Click Add License Key... and additional controls are displayed (see Figure 3-3). Enter the new
license key string and click Apply Key. The
number of available licenses is incremented by the number of licenses
in the new license key.
Using HP SIM License Manager | |
License Manager allows you to view the available and applied
licenses for all products in the HP SIM License Manager database.
You can use License Manager to add VSE Management Software licenses
to the database, but you cannot apply them to managed systems through
License Manager (except for the Capacity Advisor Extension Pack license,
which can only be applied through License Manager). To apply licenses
to managed HP Integrity or HP 9000 systems, see the preceding section.
To use HP SIM License Manager, you must have administrative rights
on the CMS. Procedure 3-4 Use License Manager to View and Add Licenses From the HP SIM menu, select Deploy License Manager.... License
Manager displays the Product License Information screen (see Figure 3-5). Select a product from the displayed list. To see all of
the systems that are currently licensed for that product, click Licensed System(s).... | | | | | NOTE: If you selected “VSE Management Sofware for Integrity”, the Licensed Systems display includes the 90-day trial license
for all managed HP Integrity or HP 9000 servers. This license is displayed
as a single line, with the text “**Trial_For_ALL_Integrity/9000**” appearing in place of the system name. | | | | |
To add a new license key, select “Add New Product” or any VSE Management Software license in the Product column and click Manage Licenses.... If you
selected a VSE Management Software license (other than the Capacity
Advisor Extension Pack license), a message is displayed to inform
you that you can only add licenses for VSE Management Software products
from this screen. To apply licenses see “Adding and Applying Licenses”. The number of available licenses of the selected type
is displayed. Click Add Licenses.... Enter
the new license key and click Open to display
the license details, including the product name, license version,
type, number of licenses purchased, and the maximum number of days
that the license can be used. Click Add Licenses Now to add the
new licenses to the database. If the licenses are added successfully,
they are listed in the Product License Information section. An error
message appears if the key is invalid, and that license information
is not added to the database. If you selected the Capacity Advisor Extension Pack license
in step 2, you can now assign that license to one or more managed
systems. Click Assign Licenses to begin selecting
the target systems. After assigning this license to target systems,
you must refresh the data display in Capacity Advisor for this license
to take effect in the current session.
For additional help on using License Manager, click the help
button within the License
Manager screen. Applying Licenses From an Earlier Release | |
Starting with VSE Management Software version 4.0 (A.04.00.07.xx), licenses are now managed in the HP SIM License
Manager database on the CMS. In previous releases, licenses were installed
directly on HP-UX managed systems. A license scan procedure was then
used to obtain the license information from the managed systems for
use on the CMS. LTUs for managed systems running Linux for HP Integrity
and Microsoft Windows for HP Integrity were installed as keys on the
CMS. When you upgrade an HP-UX CMS that has a previous version of
the VSE Management Software installed, any product LTU that was previously
installed or scanned is automatically migrated to the License Manager
database. Because the number of cores in use on a system cannot always
be discovered, you may have to correct the number of per-core licenses
migrated from the earlier LTUs. Use the vselicense command to correct these values. If permitted by your licensing
agreement with HP, unused licenses that were purchased for an earlier
release but have not yet been installed or scanned can also be added
to the License Manager database using vselicense. For details and limitations, see vselicense(1M). License Requirements For Systems With HP Instant Capacity Products | |
For systems using HP Instant Capacity products (including iCAP, GiCAP, and TiCAP), the total number of licenses assigned across all nPartitions within the complex must be equal to or greater
than the total number of processors that you have purchased.
