By default, HP SIM is configured to use a PostgreSQL database for its internal data management. If you have access to an Oracle version 10g server, you can configure the CMS to use an Oracle database instead of PostgreSQL.

NOTE: Only version 10g is supported for use with the VSE Management Software. HP recommends that you install Oracle on a different server than the CMS. This allows better performance, because HP SIM and Oracle use different recommended kernel parameter settings.

The VSE Management Software manages its own internal data using whichever database software is configured for HP SIM. Each VSE CMS must be configured with its own database instance. A single database instance cannot support more than one CMS.

Procedure 3-6 includes an optional step to configure the CMS for Oracle during installation of the VSE Management Software.

For more information about configuring HP SIM to use an Oracle database, see the HP Systems Insight Manager 5.2 Installation and Configuration Guide for HP-UX.
