By default, the Virtualization Manager defines application-specific user preferences that you can modify to fit your needs. You can modify preferences and save them as the new default setting.

To modify user preferences, from the Virtualization Manager's Visualization or Workload tab, or the Shared Resource Domains tab, choose Configure->User Preferences... . The VSE Management: User Preferences page is displayed, as shown in Figure 4-1.

You can change the following user settings:

Table 4-1 User Preference Settings and Defaults

User PreferenceSettingDefaultWhat it does
Prompt for confirmation after drag and drop?Yes/NoYesPresents a confirmation dialog box to confirm a drag/drop operation.
CAUTION: To avoid accidentally dragging and dropping an item to the wrong system, do not change this default.
Show workloads in Visualization tab by default?Show workloads/Don't show workloadsDon't show workloadsControls the initial setting of the Show Workload checkbox on the Virtualization Manager toolbar.
NOTE: Changing the preference takes affect immediately. When you change this preference, the "Show workloads" checkbox on the Virtualization Manager toolbar changes accordingly and the view changes to show or not show workloads.
Collapse all compartments by default?Collapse/Don't collapseDon't collapseThe default setting allows full details to display in top level compartments of the Visualization View when you access Virtualization Manager. Changing the default to collapse automatically collapses top-level settings, in the same way that clicking the Collapse All button [--] from the Virtualization Manager toolbar does. Collapsing is controlled by setting the Maximum number of compartments to display before auto-collapsing user preference.
NOTE: This setting affects the default value that is used when you first enter Virtualization Manager. To see this user preference take effect, log out and log back in.
Show compartment details by default?Yes – Meters and technology icons are shown/No – Only the compartment name is shownYes – Meters and technology icons are shownOn the Visualization tab, this setting controls whether the technology icons and meters will display for subcompartments in a compartment hierarchy. It does not affect top-level compartments that do not have subcompartments.
NOTE: This setting affects the default value that is used when you first enter Virtualization Manager. To see this user preference take effect, log out and log back in.
Allow animations?Yes/NoYesEnables or disables transition effects for the Visualization tab. Transition effects control how smoothly the page is rendered when you move from one state to another (for example, after toggling to show workloads or clicking to expand a compartment).
Expand compartments to multiple lines (if needed) to fit all technology icons?Yes/NoNoControls whether you see all the technology icons for a given compartment or a subset of all the icons. With the default (No), an expand tray icon appears in the compartment, indicating there are more icons hidden.
Maximum number of compartments to display before auto-collapsingMinimum =1; Maximum = 50005000On the Visualization tab, this setting detects the number of visible compartments to display. If the number of compartments exceeds the defined limit, Virtualization Manager collapses the compartments in the layout. This action is equivalent to clicking the Toolbar Collapse button [-] . The end result is that some compartments (earlier in the sort order) are expanded and later ones are collapsed.
NOTE: Auto collapsing is turned off by default (that is, the maximum number of compartments, 5000, is allowed). To improve loading performance, set this value to a lower number. Setting the value to 1 has the same effect as setting the “Collapse top level compartments by default” preference to Yes.
Maximum number of alerts to displayMinimum =1; Maximum = 500100Controls the number of warnings/errors the Virtualization Manager tracks. These are displayed on the Virtualization Manager toolbar as an alert .
Number of workloads to display per page on workload tab?Minumum = 1, Maximum = 100050On the Workload tab, controls the number of workloads that display by default. Note: Choose to display fewer workloads for highest performance.
Default collection for Tools->VSE Management...Select among available collectionsAll VSE ResourcesAllows you to set a default collection to display by default on the Visualization tab each time you access the Virtualization Manager from the HP SIM Tools menu. Use the drop-down menu to select a specific collection (for example, nPartitions, Blades, Standalone servers, VM Hosts, Enclosures, and so on) or all nodes by keeping the default “All VSE Resources.”
NOTE: To see this change take effect, from the HP SIM menu bar, select Tools->VSE Management...

When you are finished modifying the default user preferences, you have the following options:

  • Click OK to change and save your user preferences for this and subsequent sessions.

  • Click Cancel to return to your previous page, without saving or changing any preferences.

  • Click Restore Defaults to reset the preference values in the current tab to the default values, and remain on the User Preferences page.
