Modifying User Preferences

By default, the Virtualization Manager defines application-specific user preferences that you can modify to fit your needs. You can modify preferences and save them as the new default setting.

To modify user preferences, from the Virtualization Manager's Visualization or Workload tab, choose ToolsUser Preferences... . The VSE Management: User Preferences page is displayed, as shown in Figure 4-1.

You can change the following user settings:

Prompt for confirmation after drag and drop	Yes/No	Yes	Presents a confirmation dialog box to confirm a drag and drop operation. This operation moves an active logical server onto another host. The host can be a blade (for a Virtual Connect blade logical server) or hypervisor (for an ESX virtual machine logical server). For information, see “Actions that Do Not Change the Logical Server State”. This preference activates immediately after clicking OK. CAUTION: To avoid accidentally dragging and dropping an item to the wrong system, do not change this default.
“Show workloads” control default setting	Yes/No	No	Controls the initial setting of the Show Workload check box on the Virtualization Manager Toolbar. NOTE: Changing the preference will not change the current setting. This preference takes place when you when you log out and log back in.
Collapse top level compartments by default	Yes/No	No	Changing the default to Yes automatically collapses top level settings, in the same way clicking the Collapse All button from the Virtualization Manager Toolbar does. Keeping the default (no), collapsing is controlled by the setting of the Maximum number of compartments to display before auto-collapsing? user preference. This preference takes place when you select a new collection from the left-hand side, when you select a new perspective, or when you refresh the view.
Maximum number of compartments to display before auto-collapsing	Minimum =1; maximum = 500	60	When you click the Virtualization tab and the Virtualization Manager presents compartment information, if it detects that the number of visible compartments exceed this setting, it begins collapsing compartments in the layout. This is equivalent to clicking the Collapse button in a compartment. The end result is that some compartments (earlier in the sort order) are expanded and later compartments are collapsed. NOTE: Use this setting to control performance: the more compartments on screen, the slower the interactive performance. By setting this value to 1, it will have the same effect as setting the previous preference to Yes. This preference takes place when you select a new collection from the left-hand side, when you select a new perspective, or when you refresh the view.
Maximum number of alerts to display	Minimum =1; maximum = 500	100	Controls the number of warnings/errors the Virtualization Manager tracks. These are displayed on the Virtualization Manager Toolbar as an alert: This preference activates immediately after clicking OK.
Allow animations	Yes/No	No	Enables or disables transition effects for the Visualization tab. Transition effects control how smoothly the page is rendered when you move from one state to another (for example, after toggling to show workloads or clicking to expand a compartment). A slower rendering creates a smoother transition but consumes more CPU resources. As such, this setting is turned off by default. This preference activates immediately after clicking OK.
Automatically expand compartments to show all icons?	Yes/No	Yes	Controls whether you see all the icons for a given compartment or a subset of all the icons. When you specify No, an expand tray icon appears in the compartment, indicating there are more icons hidden. This preference takes place when you select a new collection from the left-hand side, when you select a new perspective, or when you refresh the view.
