Overview of Working with Systems
Systems can represent physical hardware, Virtual Machines (VM), or Virtual
Machine Hosts. They can be real systems from your
current environment or “What-If” creations to represent
new systems you are planning. You can also modify a system based
on an existing system to represent planned configuration changes.
The following tasks are described: Creating a System
When developing a scenario to model future configurations, you
can create systems to represent systems you are considering
adding to the configuration. | | | | | IMPORTANT: You must decide during the initial creation the name and if
the system is going to be a Virtual Machine (VM) or
a host for virtual machines (VM Host). You cannot change these once the system has been created.
Prerequisites. To create a system in a scenario: Procedure 4-31 To Create a System in a Scenario If
you are not on the System tab,
click the System tab. The System tab will open,
listing the systems in the scenario. Select What-If Action Create System... from the
menu-bar. The Edit Scenario - Create System screen will be displayed. Fill in the System Name field. This name must not be the
same as any other system name in the VSE environment. The
only characters allowed are upper and lower case alpha, numeric,
and the dash and period. The first character must be an
alpha character. You cannot change the name once the system
is created. Select the appropriate System Type. If there are no
VM Hosts, the VM choice will be disabled. | | | | | IMPORTANT: You cannot change this once the system has been created.
If you have selected VM in the
previous step, select a VM Host. Modify the CPU Resources as appropriate. Modify the Memory as appropriate. If you have other systems to create,
click the Apply button
and repeat the preceding 5 steps, otherwise, proceed to the following step. Click the OK button. The System tab of the Capacity Advisor - Edit Scenario screen will open.
What Now? Once you have created a
system, you might want to: Adding an Existing System
As your environment changes, you may want to add an existing
system to a scenario. Prerequisites. To add existing systems
to a scenario: Procedure 4-32 To Add an Existing System to a Scenario If you are not on the System tab, click the System tab. The System tab will open,
listing the systems in the scenario. Select Edit Add Existing Systems... from the menu-bar. The Edit Scenario - Add Existing Systems screen will be displayed. The systems with available
HP Integrity Essentials Capacity Advisor data will be displayed
in a list with check boxes beside them. Any systems licensed
for Capacity Advisor will be named below the list. If any of the systems you want
to add to the scenario are not displayed on this page, you
need to license them for Capacity Advisor (see the section “Activating
Licenses” in VSE Management Software Quick
Start Guide Version A.03.00.00) and collect
data on them (see Collecting Data). If the systems you wish to add
to the scenario are in the list of licensed systems without
available Capacity Advisor data, collect data on them (see Collecting Data)
and continue with the next step. Click in the check boxes beside
the systems you want to add to the scenario to select them. Check marks will appear in the check boxes and the row containing
he system will highlight to indicate selection. Click the OK button. The System tab of the Capacity Advisor - Edit Scenario screen will open.
What Now? Once you have added a system
to a scenario, you might want to: Editing a System
When constructing a scenario, it is frequently necessary to
modify the characteristics of a system to reflect future changes
to existing hardware or to reflect the characteristics of a
planned system. Prerequisites. To edit a system in a scenario: Procedure 4-33 To Edit a System If you are not on the System tab, click the System tab. The System tab will open,
listing the systems in the scenario. Click the check box preceding the
name of the system you wish to edit. A check mark will appear in the check box. Select What-If Action Edit System... from the
menu-bar. The Edit Scenario - Edit System screen will be displayed in a new window. Modify the CPU Resources and/or Memory parameters as desired (click the ? button to access help for details on
the controls). | | | | | IMPORTANT: You cannot modify the CPU speed of a virtual machine (VM); you
must modify the CPU speed of a VM Host, which will modify
the speed of all VMs hosted by it.
Click the OK button. The System tab of the Capacity Advisor - Edit Scenario screen will open.
What Now? Once you have edited a system,
you might want to: Moving a Virtual Machine
Moving Virtual Machines (VMs) among VM
Hosts allows you to redistribute virtual equivalents
of existing systems across physical servers. Capacity Advisor automatically
takes into account use of dynamic memory by a Virtual Machine. Prerequisites. To move a virtual machine: Procedure 4-34 To Move a Virtual System If you are not on the System tab, click the System tab. The System tab will open,
listing the systems in the scenario. Click in the check box preceding
the virtual system you wish to move. A check mark will appear in the check box. Select What-if Action Move Virtual Machine... from the menu-bar. The Edit Scenario - Move Virtual Machine screen will be displayed, with a list of all the VM Hosts
available to host the VM. | | | | | NOTE: Bar-graphs representing the CPU Utilization and Memory Utilization that will exist if the VM were moved to each of the
VM Hosts provide a quick estimate of how the VM will “fit” on each of the host systems.
Click in the circle preceding the
name of the VM host that will be the new host for the VM. The circle will be filled in and the row containing the VM Host
will be highlighted indicating the selection. Click the OK button. The System tab of the Capacity Advisor - Edit Scenario screen will open.
What Now? Once you have moved a virtual
machine, you might want to: Removing a System
As your scenarios evolve, you might need to remove systems from
a scenario to represent planned or actual changes. Prerequisites. To remove systems from a scenario: Procedure 4-35 To Remove Systems from a Scenario If you are not on the System tab, click the System tab. The System tab will open,
with a listing the systems in the scenario. Click in the check boxes beside
the systems you want to remove from the scenario to select
them. Check marks will appear in the check boxes. Select Edit Remove Systems... from the menu-bar. A confirmation screen listing the systems you are removing will
be presented. Click the OK button. You will be returned to the Capacity
Advisor - Edit Scenario screen with the systems
you selected removed.
What Now? Once you have removed systems,
you might want to:
