IMPORTANT: As of HP-UX 11i v1 December 2004 update, this version of Partition Manager is replaced by Partition Manager v2.0.

Architecture

Partition Manager v1.0 is an X-Windows application built on HP's Object Action Manager user interface framework for HP-UX tools (ObAM). For most tasks, Partition Manager can be run from any nPartition in the complex. Certain tasks require that you run Partition Manager directly on the nPartition that will be affected. From an HP-UX environment, the preferred method of running Partition Manager v1.0 is to login to the nPartition, set the DISPLAY variable, and execute the parmgr command.

From a PC environment, Partition Manager can be launched through a Web browser. To use this feature, a Web server must be installed and configured on the partition that will run Partition Manager. The Apache Web server will be automatically installed and configured when the ObAM Runtime Environment bundle (required by Partition Manager v1.0) is installed. This is currently the only Web server supported by the ObAM Runtime Environment. The Web server must be activated before it can be used.

Partition Manager executes partition(1) commands to perform administration functions.

This page contains a brief overview of the changes introduced in each release of Partition Manager. Information is presented in reverse chronological order (most recent changes first).

Partition Manager A.02.03.01 (HP Virtual Server Environment Release)

This release of Partition Manager is integrated with the HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) management tools for HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM).

Partition Manager v2.02.03 (HP Integrity Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux v1.2)

Partition Manager for Linux now is available for systems running SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.

B.12.02.02.02 (HP-UX 11i v1 December 2006 Release)

This release of Partition Manager includes the following enhancements.

  • Partition Manager for HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11) now supports servers based on the HP sx2000 chipset, including HP Superdome (SD16B, SD32B, and SD64B models), rx8640, and rx7640.

  • Partition Manager includes the ability to enable and disable Hyper-Threading for nPartitions whose cells have processors that are Hyper-Threading capable (such as dual-core Intel® Itanium® 2 processors).

  • Partition Manager for HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11) now provides integration with the HP-UX Peripheral Device Tool.

When an I/O slot action is selected from the actions menu, Partition Manager will attempt to launch the HP-UX Peripheral Device Tool (pdweb) to perform the action. This tool is only available on nPartitions running HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11) December 2006, 11i v2 (B.11.23), or later. If HP-UX Peripheral Device Tool is not running on the selected nPartition, and it is not configured to start on demand, Partition Manager cannot perform any actions on I/O slots or I/O cards.

B.31.02.03.01 (HP-UX 11i v3 Initial Release)

This is the initial release of Partition Manager for HP-UX 11i v3 (B.11.31).

When using Partition Manager to manage I/O cards and I/O slots via the HP-UX Peripheral Device Tool Web interface (pdweb), the Partition Manager host system must report a fully qualified host name (including the domain) for the pdweb host system.

  • Issue. Connecting to pdweb from Partition Manager results in an error reporting “Unresolved Host Name”, “Access Denied”, or “The page cannot be displayed”. This can occur when the URL being used to connect appears in the following format: https://unqualified-hostname:2381

The Web browser encountering this issue typically is running on a different domain than the pdweb host system.

  • Solution. Configure DNS on the Partition Manager host system to report a fully qualified host name for the pdweb host system.

    1. Confirm that there is an issue with DNS on the Partition Manager host by issuing the nslookup unqualified-hostname command.

    2. If the nslookup command reports an unqualified host name then DNS needs to be fixed to report a fully qualified host name.

    3. If the nslookup command reports that it used FILES or /etc/hosts to look up the host name, then modify the pdweb host system entries in the /etc/hosts file to comply with the following format:

      <ip-address> <fully-qualified-host-name> <unqualified-hostname>

The fully-qualified-host-name is the full name of the pdweb system including its domain, and the unqualified-hostname is the host name only.

For details of /etc/hosts configuration, see the hosts(4) manpage.

Partition Manager v2.02.01 (HP Integrity Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux v1.01)

This release of Partition Manager includes the ability to enable and disable Hyper-Threading for nPartitions whose cells have processors that are Hyper-Threading-capable (such as dual-core Intel® Itanium® 2 processors).

Partition Manager A.2.02.01 (HP Virtual Server Environment Release)

This release of Partition Manager is integrated with the HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) management tools for HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM).

  • This release of Partition Manager includes the ability to enable and disable Hyper-Threading for nPartitions whose cells have processors that are Hyper-Threading-capable (such as dual-core Intel® Itanium® 2 processors).

  • All log messages are written to the log file in English. This avoids the situation where question marks were written to the log file for some non-English languages.

  • The Tools->Refresh Data action works properly in the cell scope and I/O chassis scope.

  • All potential cross-site scripting vulnerabilities have been removed.

  • The Complex->Clear All LEDs action reports detailed failure information if any LEDs are not able to be turned off.

  • Clicking the OK button on an error message page would produce a null pointer exception in some cases. This has been fixed.

  • The Cell->Assign Cell(s) action does not generate an exception when an empty cell slot is selected for assignment.

  • Other defect fixes have been incorporated into this release.

  • When Partition Manager is logged on to an nPartition running Microsoft® Windows®, it can display and monitor the nPartition and complex, but it may report SSH errors when attempting to run commands that make changes to the nPartition or complex.

To resolve this issue, HP recommends that you configure the Microsoft® Windows® system (the managed node) to operate with this release of Partition Manager by using the following procedure:

    1. Add an account named “root” to the Administrators group on the managed node.

    2. Install OpenSSH Services for HP Systems Insight Manager on the managed node. You can download the install application from the following Web site:

      http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/22546.html

IMPORTANT: During the OpenSSH installation, set the account that runs the SSH service to be “root”.
    3. From the CMS, run the following command:

      mxagentconfig -a -n addr -u root -p passwd

where addr is the host name or IP address of the managed node, and passwd is the password for the root account on the managed node.

You can avoid this issue by using the Tools->Switch Complexes action to either log on to the service processor, or log on to an nPartition in the complex as a WBEM user.

Partition Manager v2.1.3 (Microsoft® Windows® Release)

  • This release of Partition Manager includes the ability to enable and disable Hyper-Threading for nPartitions whose cells have processors that are Hyper-Threading-capable (such as dual-core Intel® Itanium® 2 processors).

  • Partition Manager supports Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installations. While Partition Manager still supports installations with J2SE Development Kit (JDK), JDK is not required if JRE is installed.

When installing the HP Servlet Container component from the SmartSetup CD, you can optionally install JRE with the component installation.

B.23.02.01.03 (HP-UX 11i v2 June 2006 Update)

Bug fixes and other improvements have been incorporated in this release.

Partition Manager v2.01.03 (HP Integrity Essentials Foundation Pack for Linux v1.0)

  • This release of Partition Manager for Linux includes integration with the HP-UX Peripheral Device Tool Web interface (pdweb) for managing I/O slots and cards, when managing an nPartition running HP-UX with pdweb installed. This pdweb integration is not provided when managing nPartitions running Linux, Windows, or HP OpenVMS I64.

  • To avoid intermittent proxy errors due to tomcat, the Partition Manager v2.01.03 installation process moves the commons-logging.jar file from the /opt/hp/hpsmh/tomcat/webapps/parmgr/WEB-INF/lib/ directory to the /opt/hp/hpsmh/tomcat/common/lib/ directory. This is a temporary solution until this issue is resolved in a future release.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 2. This section describes changes and known limitations with this release of the HP nPartitions Commands and nPartition Provider for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 2.
NOTE: The following changes and limitation are specific to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 2. This information does not apply to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 or SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.

    • The cimserver configuration files such as server.pem (digital certificate file), client.pem (Shared Authentication Store file), and others now are stored in the /etc/Pegasus/ directory. These files are used in enabling remote administration; for details, see the parstatus (1) manpage Dependencies section

    • The /etc/Pegasus/access.conf file specifies the users who are allowed to send WBEM requests to cimserver. By default, access.conf is configured to allow only the pegasus user to send remote requests to cimserver, and by default it allows only the root and pegasus users to send local requests.

Only the parstatus and fruled commands are supported for remote access by default. To enable remote access of all nPartition Commands, you must allow the root user to send remote requests.

    • The Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 release includes Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux). For the HP nPartition Commands for Linux to work, SELinux either must be disabled or put in permissive mode. The nPartition Commands for Linux will not work when SELinux is in enforcing mode.

To put SELinux in permissive mode, use the setenforce 0 command.

To disable SELinux, modify the file /etc/selinux/config.

      For details, see setenforce (1).

A.02.02.00 (HP Virtual Server Environment Release)

  • This release of Partition Manager is integrated with the HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE) management tools for HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM).

  • Both the Partition Manager user interface and online help are available in the following languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

  • Partition Manager supports browser language settings by ignoring region codes, except for Chinese. For example, all varieties of Spanish (es, es-ar, es-es, es-mx, and others) resolve to Spanish (es). For Chinese language support, both zh and zh-cn resolve to Simplified Chinese (zh-cn), and both zh-hk and zh-tw resolve to Traditional Chinese (zh-tw).

For browser language settings not supported by Partition Manager, the English user interface and online help is displayed.

  • When in the cell scope or I/O chassis scope, selecting the Tools->Refresh Data action results in the "Loading Complex Information..." screen displaying continuously. To avoid this problem, instead click the Refresh button to refresh the data that is displayed. If you encounter this problem, use the “Back” button in your Web browser to return to the scope view and click the Refresh button to refresh the data.

  • When using the Tools->Switch Complexes action to connect to a remote nPartition using WBEM, entering an invalid password can occasionally result in an "HTTP Status 500" error. If you encounter this error, use the “Back” button in your Web browser to return to the Switch Complexes screen and enter a valid user name and password.

  • HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) 5.x works only with the following releases of Partition Manager or later:

    • HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) May 2005 release: Partition Manager version B.11.23.02.00.04

    • HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11) Fall 2005 release: Partition Manager version B.11.11.02.00.05

You must upgrade to one of these versions of Partition Manager, or later, to use Partition Manager with SIM 5.x.

Partition Manager v2.1.0 (Microsoft® Windows® Release)

With this release, Partition Manager v2 can be run on systems running Microsoft® Windows® (Windows 2000 SP3 or better, including Windows Server 2003, 64-bit edition).

In addition to the Partition Manager v2 features previously released for HP-UX, this release includes the following enhancements.

This release of Partition Manager for Microsoft® Windows® adds support for servers based on the HP sx2000 chipset, including HP Superdome (SD16B, SD32B, and SD64B models), rx8640, and rx7640.

B.23.02.01.02 (HP-UX 11i v2 December 2005 Update)

  • This release of Partition Manager adds support for servers based on the HP sx2000 chipset, including HP Superdome (SD16B, SD32B, and SD64B models), rx8640, and rx7640.

  • When managing servers based on the HP sx2000 chipset, Partition Manager can enable and disable the use of Global Shared Memory (GSM). When GSM is enabled, memory can be shared between different nPartitions in the same complex. Only GSM-enabled applications running under Microsoft Windows Server 2003 are able to use GSM features.

  • Partition Manager under Systems Management Homepage (SMH) has improved integration with the HP-UX Peripheral Device Tool Web interface (pdweb) for managing I/O slots and cards.

  • Under both HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) and SMH, the links to nPartition tools have been renamed but provide access to the same features of Partition Manager.

  • Under HP SIM, the location where Partition Manager is launched has changed to Configure-->Partition Management.

  • Additional bug fixes have also been incorporated in this release.

Compatibility

The following are known compatibility issues related to using the Partition Manager interface to the HP-UX Peripheral Device Tool for the December 2005 release.

  • There is no SMH banner when pdweb is called from Partition Manager, so to logout of pdweb you must close the browser window. Click the "X" button on the browser window to close it, or if available click the "Done" button to close the window.

  • There is a limitation to accessing pdweb when managing an nPartition running the HP-UX 11i v2 December 2005 release and using a release of Partition Manager prior to December 2005.

The pre-December 2005 Partition Manager attempts to access pdweb using ports 1110/1188 and is not aware of SMH port 2301. As a result, Partition Manager displays a message indicating to manually start pdweb.

Because pdweb uses port 2301/2381, the pre-December 2005 Partition Manager will not access it, so manually starting pdweb does not resolve the issue.

To resolve this issue, upgrade to the Partition Manager December 2005 release.

  • There is a limitation when using the Partition Manager December 2005 release to manage an nPartition that is running either the HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 release or the HP-UX 11i v2 September 2004 release and is not running pdweb.

Partition Manager first attempts to access pdweb using ports 1110/1188 and if it is not running it then attempts ports 2301/2381. In most cases SMH is listening on port 2301 and so Partition Manager forwards the request to SMH, but the May 2005 and September 2004 releases of SMH are not integrated with pdweb and instead generate a "page not found" error.

To resolve this issue, upgrade to the HP-UX 11i v2 December 2005 release.

Partition Manager v2.0.4 (Microsoft® Windows® Release)

With this release, Partition Manager v2.0 can be run on systems running Microsoft® Windows®. The supported Windows releases are Windows 2000 SP3 or better, including Windows Server 2003 (64-bit).

Partition Manager Version 2.0 for Windows is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

In addition to the Partition Manager v2.0 features previously released for HP-UX, this release includes the following enhancements.

  • Partition Manager now runs as an application under HP System Management Homepage.

  • Several minor improvements were made in managing nPartitions running Microsoft® Windows®.

B.11.11.02.00.03 (HP-UX 11i v1 December 2004 Update)

With this release, Partition Manager v2.0 replaces Partition Manager v1.0 on HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11).

Partition Manager v2.0 offers several significant improvements over Partition Manager v1.0, including a new, more graphical user interface and configuration of nPartitions on remote complexes. This release allows you to use the same version of Partition Manager on systems running either HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11) or HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23).

Partition Manager v2.0 B.11.23.02.00.03 (Fall 2004 Update)

The previous release of Partition Manager v2 ran on Itanium®-based systems only. This release runs on both PA-RISC and Itanium®-based systems.

Partition Manager can now interact with the nPartition Provider using WBEM version 2.0. Under WBEM 2.0, the location of the SSL certificate store on the CIM Server has changed. Instructions for managing SSL certificates have been modified accordingly. For details, refer to the online help (managing SSL certificates).

Partition Manager now displays an identifying banner when Partition Manager is launched outside of HP Servicecontrol Manager, similar to the banner displayed when Partition Manager is launched from within HP Servicecontrol Manager.

In addition, several minor defects were fixed to improve the overall quality of the product.

Summary of Defect Fixes in Release B.11.23.02.00.03

  • Improvements were made to the high availability checks in the Create nPartition and Modify nPartition actions.

  • Under certain circumstances, the initial Partition Manager URL could be incorrectly formed, resulting in a "HTTP Status 404" message at startup.

  • When launched from the command line on systems with HP Systems Insight Manager installed, and in certain other circumstances, the parmgr command failed with the message:

ERROR: The command to start the server succeeded, but the server is not listening on port 50000.

  • A null pointer exception was displayed when CLM configuration was attempted on an nPartition that includes an empty cell.

  • Improvements were made to the way that Partition Manager recovers from the use of the browser's “Back” button.

  • Under certain circumstances, the Modify nPartition action failed with an internal error, causing Partition Manager to fail to return to the original view from which the action was entered.

  • I/O chassis are now displayed within cabinets in the same order that they appear physically in the cabinet.

  • The Unassign Cells action was enabled even if cells from different nPartitions were selected.

  • Pop-up tool tips have been improved to provide more information about the status of objects and the reason that actions are disabled.

  • Powered-off cells attached to an I/O chassis were displayed as not being core cell capable, even though Partition Manager cannot tell if the powered-off cell has core I/O. This field will now show “?” for powered-off cells.

  • Powered-off I/O chassis were displayed as having “0” total I/O slots, “0” empty I/O slots, and “0” occupied I/O slots. These fields will now show “?” for powered-off I/O chassis.

  • The Show Complex Details action showed the amount of allocated CLM in megabytes, even though the units were listed as gigabytes. This value is now shown in gigabytes.

  • When connected to an nPartition Provider running on a remote nPartition, Partition Manager displayed the host operating system information incorrectly. The information displayed was for the host running Partition Manager, rather than the nPartition being managed.

Partition Manager v2.0 B.11.23.02.00.02 (March 2004 Update)

Several minor defects were fixed to improve the overall quality of the product. In addition, the following functionality changes were made.

  • At startup, Partition Manager will check the complex for possible configuration problems. If potential problems are found, the analyze complex health action will be displayed before proceeding to the initial view.

  • By default, Partition Manager now validates SSL certificates from the CIM server. This incorporates the security fix included in the B.11.23.02.00.01 update. Certificate validation can be disabled if SSL security is not important in your environment.

For more information, refer to the online help (the CIM server and managing SSL certificates).

Partition Manager v2.0 B.11.23.02.00.01 (Web Download Only)

This release was made available to fix a security issue identified in HP Security Bulletin SSRT3636 (document id: HPSBUX0311-296). In the previous release, Partition Manager did not validate SSL certificates sent from the CIM server. This release changed the default Partition Manager behavior to validate SSL certificates. Certificate validation can be disabled if SSL security is not important in your environment.

For more information, refer to the online help (the CIM server and managing SSL certificates).

The security bulletin is available on the IT Resource Center (ITRC).

Partition Manager v2.0 B.11.23.01.00 (Initial Release)
