The process of setting up a printer or shared printer queue in Advanced Server involves configuring an HP-UX system LP Printer and then adding a printer (shared printer queue) using the net share command. This procedure creates a share name which is the same as the printer name (or shared printer queue name). Then, you should load any desired print drivers. After deciding how users should share network printers, you are ready to begin.

Remember that Advanced Server terminology differs from Windows NT, as shown in the following table.

Configuring an HP-UX System Printer

To connect and configure an HP-UX system printer in the LP Print subsystem, follow the instructions included with the printer and in your HP-UX system documentation and observe the following guidelines:

  • At the HP-UX command prompt, use the sam utility to create a printer (not a class). Be sure to select the correct printer type, for example, hplaserjet for a generic Hewlett-Packard printer.

  • The sam utility will set the printer in the proper state for operation. Refer to the HP-UX System Administration Tasks manual for troubleshooting information.

  • Type lp -dlpdest -n2 -t"Title" /etc/passwd. The system displays this message:

request id is lpdest-# (1 file)

If the printer prints two copies of the /etc/passwd file (a list of HP-UX system logins on your server), with the title "Title" on its banner page, the printer is configured correctly.

If the printer does not print the /etc/passwd file, a problem has occurred. Ensure the printer is plugged in and powered on. Check the printer cable installation. Then, check the printer configuration information.

When you complete this procedure, you have configured the HP-UX system's LP Printer which will be used as a printer port when you add a printer (shared printer queue) using the Add Printer Wizard from a Windows NT Workstation computer.
