NOTE: The 10/100VG card is a combination card that allows you to connect to a 10Mbps Ethernet, IEEE 802.3 or 100 Mbps 100VG-AnyLAN network. The hardware card will be referred to as a 10/100VG card throughout this manual.

Prior to loading the 100VG-AnyLAN product onto your system, check that you have met the following hardware and software prerequisites:

  1. Check that the /usr/bin, /usr/sbin, and /sbin directories are in your PATH using the command:

    echo $PATH
  2. The operating system should have been upgraded to 10.0 or later software.

To obtain this information, execute the command:

    /bin/uname -a
  3. You have a twisted pair cable to connect your 10/100VG card to your hub. (The cable and hub do not come with the HP 100VG-AnyLAN product.) A hardware checklist is shown below:

    A. Cable: 4-pair UTP, categories 3, 4 or 5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP).

    B. Card: HP 9000 10/100VG EISA card.

    C. Hub: 100VG hub for 100 Mbps speed

    10 Base-T hub for 10 Mbps speed.

Check that all four pairs of your twisted-pair LAN port cables are available for use by the 100VG-AnyLAN network. For more information on cables, refer to appendix C.

    D. Speed Matching Bridge Module: The speed matching bridge module is an optional component that you can add to the hub to provide 100:10 bridge capability. The bridge feature allows you to connect an existing 10 Mbit/sec Ethernet to a 100 Mbit/sec Ethernet-frame-based 100VG-AnyLAN.

NOTE: The HP PC 10/100VG card (J2577A) and the HP 9000 10/100VG card (J2645A) are not interchangeable. The PC 10/100VG card is not supported by the HP 9000 100VG-AnyLAN driver.
  4. The system backplane contains an EISA system interface (with an exception of the Model 712). If you have a Series 715/33, 720, or 730 model, be sure that you ordered and installed the EISA system interface; for all other HP 9000 EISA models, the EISA system interface is preinstalled. The EISA interface should also contain an available empty EISA slot for the 10/100VG card.

  5. You have an IP/Internet address, alias, and subnet mask (optional), for your new 10/100VG card. After you have obtained the information, fill out the Network Card Configuration worksheet in your 100VG-AnyLAN quick installation card.

A summary of the major characteristics of the 10/100VG card is shown on the following page in "Table 1: 100VG-AnyLAN/9000 card summary."

*Speed Configuration for the 10/100VG card is selected by connecting the port to the 10 Mbit or 100 Mbit connector of the card and to the hub corresponding to the speed of the card. The card will automatically detect which connector is being used when the cable is attached. Only one speed (connector) can be used at a time. No speed configuration is required using the software.

  6. You have super-user status.

NOTE: The only Application Programmatic Interface (API) supported by the 100VG-AnyLAN/9000 product is the Data Link Provider Interface (DLPI). Refer to the DLPI Programmer's Guide for more detailed information .
