To use the VERITAS Volume Manager Storage Administrator, the Storage Administrator server must be running on the HP-UX machine to be administered. Only one instance of the Storage Administrator server can be running at a time.

The Storage Administrator server can be run either in normal mode or in auto-start mode. In normal mode, once started, the Storage Administrator server must run continuously and must not be stopped.

In auto-start mode, the Storage Administrator server starts whenever a VMSA client tries to connect to the server, if the server is not already running. If no VMSA clients are connected for a certain amount of time (15 minutes, by default), the server automatically terminates and restarts at the next client connection.

To run the Storage Administrator server in normal mode, follow the steps below in “Starting the Storage Administrator Server Manually in Normal Mode”. To run the Storage Administrator in auto-start mode, follow the steps in “Starting the Storage Administrator Server in Auto-Start Mode”.

NOTE: The Storage Administrator server starts up automatically at system startup. You only need to start it manually as described below if you want to start it without rebooting the system.

Starting the Storage Administrator Server Manually in Normal Mode

Start the VERITAS Volume Manager Storage Administrator server manually as follows:

  1. Log in as root.

  2. Go to the directory where the Storage Administrator is installed:

    cd /opt/HPvmsa/bin

  3. Start the server:

    ./vmsa_server &

A file named server.log will be created in the /var/opt/vmsa/logs directory. If the server starts successfully, this file should contain the following (after a few seconds):

    rebound //host:2410/vrts.remote.vrtsServer

  4. Confirm that the Storage Administrator is running:

    vmsa_server -q

See vmsa_server(1M) for more information about the Storage Administrator server.

Starting the Storage Administrator Server in Auto-Start Mode

To start the Storage Administrator server in auto-start mode, do the following steps.

NOTE: You can run autostart as described here even if vmsa_server is already running.
  1. Log in as root.

  2. Type:

    autostart on

  3. To confirm that auto-start mode is enabled, run the following:

    netstat -a | grep vmsa

The output should show that a VMSA service has a LISTEN state:

    *.vmsa *.* 0 0 0 0 LISTEN

NOTE: Auto-start mode remains in effect across system reboots. To disable auto-start mode, type:

autostart off

For more information about auto-start mode, see autostart(1M).
