The following table lists the supported partition configuration tasks on HP Superdome servers.

Detailed procedures for all tasks in Table 4-1 “Partition Configuration and Management Tasks ” are provided in “Procedures for Managing Partitions”.

You can perform each of these tasks using one or more of the following software tools: the Guardian Service Processor (GSP) menus, the Boot Console Handler (BCH) menu, HP-UX commands, and Partition Manager. See “Overview of Partition Management Tools” for details on these tools.

Table 4-1 Partition Configuration and Management Tasks

Task ProceduresTask DescriptionTools
“Creating a Genesis Partition”

Establish a one-cell partition.

This "Genesis Partition" can be used for all subsequent partition configurations in a Superdome server's complex.

GSP

“Restoring a Complex Profile”

Revert to the previous complex profile configuration.

GSP

“Determining the Local (Current) Partition Number”

Determine which partition you currently are using. Known as the "local partition".

BCH

HP-UX: parstatus

“Creating a New Partition”Create a partition, using at least one available cell that is connected to an I/O chassis with core I/O installed.

HP-UX: parcreate

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Deleting (Removing) a Partition”

Remove a partition definition, thus making its cells and I/O available for other use.

HP-UX: parremove

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Naming and Renaming Partitions”

Establish the partition's name, which is used in various reports and console menus.

BCH

HP-UX: parmodify

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Modifying Partitions' Boot Paths”

Set the boot device paths, including the PRI, ALT, and HAA devices.

BCH

HP-UX: parmodify

“Adding Cells to a Partition”

Add an additional cell to an existing partition.

HP-UX: parmodify

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Removing Cells from a Partition”Remove a cell (and any associated I/O) from a partition, thus making the cell and I/O available for other use.

HP-UX: parmodify

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Setting and Checking a Partition's Core Cell Choices”

Set and list which cell(s) are to be used as the "core cell" if the primary core cell fails.

BCH

HP-UX: parmodify

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Setting and Checking Cell Attributes”

Set and list cell attributes, including the "use-on-next-boot" setting.

BCH

HP-UX: parstatus, parmodify

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Moving Cells to a Different Partition”

Use software tools to assign cells (and associated I/O) to different partitions.

This can involve running the appropriate software tools on multiple partitions.

HP-UX

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Moving I/O to a Different Partition”

Using software only, you can accomplish this by assigning the corresponding cell (to which the I/O is connected) to a different partition.

HP-UX

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Moving an I/O Chassis to a Different Cell”

HP Service Personnel Only

Accomplish this by reconfiguring the cell-to-I/O cables.

None. Must reconfigure the hardware.

“Listing All Configured Partitions”

List all partitions currently configured within a Superdome complex.

GSP

HP-UX: parstatus

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Listing Cell Partition Assignments”

List all cells, or selected cells, within a Superdome complex, including the cells' partition configuration status.

HP-UX: parstatus

“Consolidating Multiple Partitions”

Reassign all cells in one partition to belong to another partition.

HP-UX

Partition Manager (parmgr)

“Unlocking Complex Profiles”

Use With Extreme Caution
