The administrator configures each HPDPS host to run in one
of two environments: the Basic Environment
or the DCE Extended Environment.
The Basic Environment is used when your host is not a member
of a Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) cell. In the Basic
Environment, only the root login may create, modify, or delete HPDPS
objects; all other logins are not authorized to perform these operations.
All logins are authorized to print to each printer defined on the
host, and may use all initial-value-job and initial-value-document
objects. All logins are also authorized to list the attributes of
all objects defined on the host with the pdls
command.
The DCE Extended Environment is used when your host is a member
of a DCE cell. Your level of authorization is determined by your
DCE login. In the DCE Extended Environment, there are three levels
of security:
- Administrator
Can create, modify, and delete HPDPS objects.
- Operator
Can modify HPDPS objects, but not create or delete
them.
- User
Can perform those operations for which an HPDPS
administrator gives authorization. Normally, a user is not given
authorization to create, modify, or delete HPDPS objects, other
than his own jobs and documents.
If a user is not logged in to DCE, he may be able to access
certain logical printers that have been configured not to require
DCE authorization. If so, he may also access his own jobs and documents
sent to those printers. A user cannot access any logical printers
that are configured to require DCE authorization.
The administrator for your system will provide the proper
authorizations for you depending on your job responsibilities. Another
person cannot change the condition of your jobs unless that person
has the proper authorization to do so. See HP Distributed
Print Service Administration Guide for information on
security and how authorization is set and controlled.
