Overview

The Technical Print Service uses configuration files to identify and define features of the printer models it supports. Printer capabilities such as page resolution, page orientation, and page size are specified using attribute definitions. An attribute definition uses the same syntax as an X resource specification.

As a system administrator, you may need to edit certain attributes in the printer configuration files. This chapter will help you become familiar with the content and organization of these files.

For specific instructions explaining how to add or configure a printer, refer to Chapter 6 “Chapter 6: Adding and Configuring Printers ”.

Installation Directory

Default printer configuration files are installed in /usr/lib/X11/LANG/print. If you choose to modify these files, your changes are made in a separate configuration directory, /etc/X11/LANG/print.

NOTE: If you have previously started an X print server, and then modify printer configuration files, you must restart the X print server to have your changes take effect.
