Setup Tasks

Before using the Technical Print Service, you will need to perform some preliminary configuration. This requires that you:

  • Configure and start an X print server

  • Add and configure printers

Both tasks have related configuration files which are discussed more fully in subsequent chapters.

Configuring an X Print Server

An X print server is configured and run on a per machine basis. Depending on your printing requirements, you may decide to run an X print server on a single workstation or on multiple systems.

On HP-UX systems, the video server and X print server are configured separately. You configure either type of server using SAM - the System Administration Manager.

X print server configuration information is stored in several files. SAM creates or modifies these files during the configuration process. For example, startup information is placed in a configuration file that is read at boot time. When the system is rebooted, this file identifies which X print servers to restart.

For detailed configuration instructions, refer to Chapter 4 “Chapter 4: Configuring an X Print Server ”, which describes the X print server, server configuration files, and starting the Technical Print Service.

Adding and Configuring Printers

If you are connecting a printer to your workstation for the first time, use SAM to initially set up the printer. Printers must be installed in the lp spooler before they can be accessed through the Technical Print Service. Once a printer is added to the spooler system, it also needs to be made available to the Technical Print Service.

This is accomplished by an X print server configuration file. This file defines the X print server's default mechanism for obtaining a list of printers it will manage. The default behavior may accommodate your printing needs. Or, you can modify the default behavior and customize the configuration file by adding or excluding individual printers. For a complete description of the X print server configuration file refer to Chapter 4 “Chapter 4: Configuring an X Print Server ”.

If you have a variety of printers which use different print drivers, it is recommended that you also modify the printer configuration file to match your requirements. The printer configuration file specifies what print driver is to be used with a particular printer model.

For detailed instructions refer to Chapter 6 “Chapter 6: Adding and Configuring Printers ”.
