Task 9: Modify and Assign Node Roles

Follow this procedure to use the cluster_config utility to view the default system configuration and modify default role assignments and assign additional roles to nodes where necessary. This task is especially important if you are configuring services for improved availability.

  1. When the following command-line menu options are displayed, enter the letter h or the word help to display a description of each menu option. Entries are not case sensitive.

    [L]ist Nodes, [M]odify Nodes, [A]nalyze, [H]elp, [P]roceed, [Q]uit: h
    
    Valid commands are:
    L - Lists discovered nodes with current location, assigned roles,
    and external network connections
    M - Modifies nodes with the Modify Node submenu
    A - Analyze current configuration
    H - Displays this help message
    P - Proceeds to the next cluster configuration step
    Q - Quits this utility leaving the cluster unmodified
    [L]ist Nodes, [M]odify Nodes, [C]heck, [H]elp, [P]roceed, [Q]uit:
  2. Enter the letter l to list the default configuration; then enter the letter b or the letter a to view an abbreviated or full version of the output:

    Output Type - a[B]breviated, [A]ll, [C]ancel:
    • The a[B]breviated output is similar to the following. Nodes with the same role assignments are condensed into one line item.

    • [A]ll output is similar to the following and displays specific information about the head node and each client node. Be aware that output can be lengthy on a system with a large number of nodes. For example, the output for a 500-node system with 495 compute-only nodes results in approximately 1500 lines of output.

  3. Do the following to determine whether you have to modify the default role assignments:

    1. See Appendix F for a description of the default role assignments based on system size.

      Read about the special considerations regarding the default role assignments to determine if the role assignments are suitable for your environment. If you do not modify the role assignments, the system will be configured with the default assignments.

    2. If you are configuring services for improved availability, read the information in Table 1-2 to ensure that you assign the appropriate roles to the nodes in availability sets so that service failover can occur.

    3. If you plan to configure an external Ethernet connection on any node, you must assign the external role to that node.

    4. By default, the head node is assigned with the console_network and management_hub roles. You have the flexibility to assign the console_network and management_hub roles to multiple nodes and HP recommends that you consider using one management hub for every 64 to 128 nodes.

      However, on systems with more than 256 nodes, HP recommends that you remove the console_network and management_hub roles from the head node so that the management hub activity does not interfere with the services that only run on the head node.

  4. Use the Modify Nodes and Analyze options on the cluster_config command-line menu to adjust the role assignments and create an external Ethernet connection on any node, if required.

    If you installed remote graphics software (such as HP RGS or Virtual GL), you must configure the external Ethernet devices (the external NICs) on the SVA nodes.

    See Appendix G for information about how to use the menu options, how to assign node roles, and how to configure external Ethernet connections on a node.

  5. When you are satisfied with the role assignments and external Ethernet configuration, enter the letter p to apply the configuration to the system:

  6. Do one of the following when this prompt appears:

    [S]ervices Config, [P]roceed, [Q]uit: 
    • Enter the letter s to perform customized services configuration. This option is intended for experienced XC administrators who want to customize role services. Intervention like this is typically not required for HP XC systems. HP recommends that you enter p to continue with the system configuration process and proceed to “Task 10: Respond to Configuration Questions”.

      NOTE: If you are an experienced HP XC administrator, see “Customize Service and Client Configurations” for more information about customizing the services configuration.
    • Enter the letter p to continue with the system configuration process.

      When the system configuration process begins, the configuration and management database is not consistent and complete again until after cluster_config processing is complete. Therefore, do not press Ctrl-c during this time.

    • Enter the letter q to exit from the system configuration process. The following prompt appears to give you the option to save your responses to the configuration and management database:

      Do you want to apply your changes to the cluster configuration? [y/n] y

Proceed to “Task 10: Respond to Configuration Questions” to respond to the remainder of the system configuration questions.
