Complete instructions for installing a Linux distribution are outside the scope of this blueprint. This section provides information to ensure installation of the required packages for the OSMS J2EE Application Server stack.

NOTE: If you are installing the OSMS J2EE Application Server stack on a system with an existing Linux distribution, you can skip this section and proceed to verify the Linux Installation.

Required Packages—The J2EE Application Server Middleware Stack depends on several software components that are included with the SLES10 distribution media. To verify the package selection, perform the following steps:

  1. From the Installation Settings screen of YaST, select the Software tab.

  2. From the Filter options drop-down list, select Package Groups.

  3. In the Package Groups pane, expand the Development group and select Languages from the expanded list.

Verify that the perl, python, and PHP components are selected as displayed in Figure 3

  4. From the Productivity packages group, select Networking.

Additional Recommendations—Recommendations for installing the Linux distribution are as follows:

  • Allocate the required disk space for various partitions using fdisk or disk druid rather than using automated partitioning.

  • Partition the disk into different parts (namely, /home, /usr, /opt …) as per your application requirements. Creating multiple partitions as a security feature and a safe approach for system management.

The space requirements for the middleware components are dependent on the number of components selected for installation. For a full installation of all the middleware components, 36GB of free space is needed; the swap space should be twice the RAM capacity.

Verifying the Linux Installation

Verify the installation of all required packages, by entering the following:

# rpm –q apache2 apache2-prefork apache2–mod_perl apache2–mod_python \

apache2–mod_php5 webalizer

If any of these packages are not installed, locate the RPM package on the Linux distribution media, and then install.

NOTE: By default, SLES10 enables the iptables firewall, which prevents external systems from accessing ports below 1024. Refer to “Appendix B: Frequently Asked Questions” and verify the firewall is disabled or appropriate rules are set to allow the Apache and Tomcat connection. The system verification steps described later in this document will not work if the iptables firewall is improperly configured.
